Old Houses, Modern Comfort

The Right Way to Condition a Historic Home

Portsmouth’s beautiful old housing — South End colonials, West End Victorians, everything around the historic district — was built long before anyone imagined ductwork. Retrofitting ducts into these homes means chases through closets, dropped ceilings, and holes in horsehair plaster. Ductless mini splits skip all of it: slim indoor heads, one small penetration per room, full heat and AC, and the house keeps its bones intact.

Living near the harbor adds one more wrinkle — salt air is hard on outdoor condenser coils. Placement and coastal-rated equipment matter here in a way they don’t inland, and annual coil cleaning pays for itself in equipment life. We serve all of Portsmouth and the surrounding towns, including Newmarket, Kittery across the bridge, and Eliot, Maine. See the full services list.

FAQ

Portsmouth Questions

Will a mini split ruin the look of my historic home?

Done right, no. Indoor heads can be placed high and discreet, line sets routed along trim lines or through closets, and the outdoor unit tucked out of street view. We plan placement with you before drilling anything.

Does salt air really matter for HVAC equipment?

Within a mile or so of the water, yes. Coils corrode faster, so equipment choice, placement out of direct sea breeze, and an annual rinse-and-inspect make a real difference in lifespan.

Is Portsmouth too far for you?

No — about 30 minutes. We’re there regularly, and emergency calls get the same 24/7 answer as our home town.
